Manuka Standards
A Complex Honey
Containing thousands of natural compounds Mānuka honey is a force of nature, constantly changing, thick like jelly and with a characteristic burnt caramel/medicinal like flavour.
Due to the rarity of this honey there were concerns around adulteration and blending. In response the Ministry for Primary Industries undertook research to identify the main markers of this rare honey.
After analysing thousands of samples MPI in early 2018 developed the first global Mānuka honey standard. Using accredited laboratory testing one test establishes the four main chemicals (2'-Methoxyacetophenone (2'-MAP), 2-methoxybenzoic acid (2-MBA), 3-phenyllactic acid (3-PLA), and 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acid (4-HPLA) and one test confirms a DNA component.
This testing will establish if its a Monofloral Mānuka, Multifloral Mānuka or a Non - Mānuka Honey. This is the only government-regulated and approved standard for Manuka Honey in the world.
Monofloral Mānuka honey from New Zealand is the purest and only true to label Mānuka Honey available in the world.
Our Traceability
Using the unique TrustCodes system we apply a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone. This delivers cloud based brand protection and anti-counterfeit based on a unique per-item digital identity, acting as a licence plate to intelligently capture and enhance data. You can view the MGO lab report for the particular jar you hold.
Harvested
True Mānuka Honey comes from New Zealand, it is harvested fresh from the hives after the bees collect it from the native Mānuka Bush (Leptosperum Scoparium)
Tested
We use independent testing to establish what our honey is and what level of MGO it contains. We are presented with a test report that determines what the honey can be sold as.
Packaged
Once the honey has met our strict quality controls it can then be packaged and labelled appropriately on site in our RMP certified export grade facility.
True to Label
The number one way to easily authenticate Mānuka Honey is to look for Packed and labelled in New Zealand on the label. If it was then the honey would have been subject to the strict Manuka standard we operate by.
